Building the Silicon Desert

A state that leads the nation in technology and innovation: for years, that’s the future Arizona State University has championed for Arizona. Recognizing the immense potential for the microelectronics industry to shape the 21st-century global economy, ASU has both led and taken on assignments to support a strategic mission that has propelled Arizona to the forefront of America’s technological revolution.

We’ve worked to build Arizona’s microelectronics ecosystem by partnering with the biggest industry players in the state in research and education, and these efforts are paying off. Global microelectronics enterprises are making huge moves in Arizona: Intel and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Corporation have invested a combined $60 billion in three new facilities in Arizona, and Apple announced plans to buy Arizona-made chips. And these two leading companies are not alone – Applied Materials, an industry giant with global reach, invested $200 million to partner with ASU to develop new capacity for research, innovation and training. Owing to the efforts of ASU and its government and industry partners, dozens of companies are on the move in Arizona, making our state one of America’s leading hubs for this expanding industry.

More than just a traditional medical school or hospital network, ASU Health is mobilizing diverse resources – from homes and schools to clinics and cutting-edge research labs—to dramatically improve the health outcomes of Arizona’s families while establishing the state as a leader in health and wellness innovation.
