How we flourish
Arizona is rapidly growing and changing, and ASU’s charge is to address significant and growing health care needs and help improve health outcomes for families across Arizona. ASU Health is rising to this challenge through a comprehensive approach that aims to make a meaningful impact across the state, from families at home to schools and districts, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies—everyone.
Based in downtown Phoenix, ASU Health will leverage all health-related assets of ASU. By launching a new medical school, creating a school for public health technology, launching a “health observatory,” developing the health workforce and more, ASU is accelerating its health-related efforts to tackle the state’s urgent health care needs, now and into the future.
Improving health and health care across Arizona
ASU Health’s goals are designed to respond to Arizona’s urgent health care needs now and into the future. They include:
Improve health care access and health education in Arizona
Triple the number of nurses and nurse practitioners and increase the number of physicians, health care researchers and other community health workers.
Triple ASU’s clinical and health care partnerships to expand knowledge, accelerate innovation and drive connectivity.
Drive innovations to fight pervasive health challenges, address health care workforce shortages and improve health outcomes in Arizona and beyond.
Give people the tools and information necessary to make more informed decisions about health and health care.
Transforming health education and research
ASU health will create new and expand existing health-related schools to transform how health care is designed, delivered and measured while also producing new physicians, nurses, specialists, technologists and scientists — all the groups that need to be focused on Arizona’s health. Graduates will blend medicine, engineering, technology and humanities to become a different kind of health care leader, leveraging new tools such as AI and data science to connect with more patients, advance innovative practices and improve health outcomes.
ASU School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering
ASU’s School of Medicine and Advanced Medical Engineering is more than just a medical school. The new school will produce physicians who blend medicine, engineering, technology and humanities to become a different kind of health care leader. Graduates will leverage new tools such as AI and data science to connect with more patients, seek innovative practices and improve health outcomes.
School of Technology for Public Health
Recognizing that public health will be deeply influenced by technology, the new school will focus on training the next generation of experts who will leverage technology and data as central to transforming public health. The new school was designed by working with national industry leaders who examined the needs in public health. The effort was co-chaired by Dr. Susan Blumenthal, a retired rear admiral and former U.S. assistant surgeon general, and Sir Malcolm Grant, chancellor of the University of York and founding chairman of England’s National Health Service.
ASU Medical Master’s Institute
The Medical Master’s institute will help increase the flow of new MDs and DOs to Arizona and offer novel programs—such as master’s degrees in medical engineering and design, and in observational sciences—to fill skills gaps or provide upskilling opportunities.
Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation
For decades, ASU’s Edson College of Nursing and Health Innovation has advanced nursing science, education and practice to meet Arizona’s need for nurses. ASU Health will greatly expand the college by tripling the number of nurses produced at the bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral levels, answering the critical need for more nurses in Arizona and the country.
College of Health Solutions
ASU’s College of Health Solutions brings together researchers, faculty, students and community partners from a variety of disciplines to translate scientific research and discovery into practical solutions that make a difference. ASU Health will strengthen the college’s ability to produce disruptive solutions that address systemic health issues and create a culture of better health.
Reaching into our communities
The Health Observatory at ASU looks at the health of Arizonans to prepare our state to identify, track and mitigate future health crises. A comprehensive, data-driven understanding of community health will create a more equitable, resilient, impactful and cost-effective health care system. It will drive medical innovation and detect, respond to and prevent emerging health threats. Our approach will leverage real-time and holistic data to provide leaders with the information they need to take action quickly. It’s a model that will improve health outcomes for Arizona and can scale nationally to help leaders across the country make more informed public health decisions.
ASU clinics
ASU Health will launch a network of clinics throughout the state. These clinics will help expand access to quality health care, broaden health literacy and serve as unique student learning platforms. ASU Clinics will also enable and accelerate innovation as living laboratories for emerging health technologies.
Clinical and industry partnerships
A critical step in the process of creating new health care professionals is establishing a network of partners for their training to be completed. ASU has a well-established strategic alliance with Mayo Clinic, a partnership with Phoenix Children’s Hospital and is working closely with numerous other health care organizations throughout the state.
